Dickensian Christmas Market

The historic town of Berwick upon Tweed is the perfect setting for a Dickensian Christmas Market. The town, steeped in history, was once visited by Charles Dickens himself, having stayed the night in The Kings Arms Hotel on Hide Hill after he gave a recital in the Assembly Rooms.

This year’s Dickensian Christmas Market is due to be in December on Berwick High Street which is to be pedestrianised for the occasion. Visitors are expected from far and wide to experience the festive charms of the market, to sample the mulled wine and hog roast, and to mingle with the locals, many of who will be dressed up in traditional Dickensian costume.

Dickensian Christmas Organised by members of the Berwick Events Group, we are expecting this to be the biggest market yet, with help from our main media sponsor, The Berwick Advertiser, and grants provided by both Northumberland County Council and Berwick Town Council.

Other money raised has come from car boot sales organised throughout the year by the Berwick Events Group, held most Sundays in the car park in Castlegate.

The Berwick Events Group welcomes any new members or volunteers who would like to help out and take part in the market.

With over 50 stalls expected this year, there will be everything you would expect (and a whole lot more!) from a tradition Dickensian Christmas Market. A hog roast, hot food of every variety including hot fresh doughnuts, roast chestnuts, and the ever popular mulled wine.

There will be stalls lining the street selling a wide range of gifts, ideal for those ‘hard to buy for’ relatives, with food stalls and farmers market stalls overflowing with delicious provisions to make sure your Christmas is an extra special one. Other stalls will include arts & crafts, sweets of every description, a variety of home baking, jewellery, and a grand selection of local produce.

Children will be enchanted by the chance to mingle with the locals dressed in tradition Dickensian costumes (kindly supplied by Val and Alan Knowles), or a visit to see Santa Claus in his grotto in the nearby Town Hall.

Ice Rink For the first time this year we will have the added attraction of an ice rink (which we are sure will be very popular with participants and onlookers alike), a family funfair, magicians, fire eaters, street statues, a barrel organ, and a policeman on a Penny Farthing bicycle weaving through the crowds.

Refreshments are provided by The Old Vicarage Guest House in Tweedmouth who will be serving Victorian afternoon teas in the Town Hall.

There will also be, throughout the day, free music and entertainment up and down the street and on stage. All the stage and electrical work is provided by Brian Martin PFL Audio.

There will also be the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets (they are already on sale now) for a cash prize draw, a tombola stall, and an old fashioned photo shoot which will provide the perfect reminder of a fantastic day out for all the family. Make sure to make a date in your diary for what promises to be a fantastic, festive day out for all the family at the Berwick Dickensian Christmas Market.
